Pre-Conference Activity - Changing Education Paradigms with Digital Learning

I’d like you to encourage you to participate in the following flipped conference activity.  The main goal of this activity is to help spark fresh ideas and encourage new ways of thinking about digital learning in 21st century education as you prepare to join us for this year's conference.  However, there will be also activities at the conference that build on this pre-conference activity, so I hope that you’ll find time to participate over the coming week.  I hope you enjoy the experience!

Changing Education Paradigms with Digital Learning
1) View the following videos

  • First, view "Sir Ken Robinson - Changing Education Paradigms" to consider one viewpoint of where education has come from, where it is now, and where it should be headed, especially focusing on his concept of the need to nurture the skills of divergent thinking and collaboration.
  • Second - view "Digital Aristotle - Thoughts on the Future of Education" and consider the how elements of digital learning and the concept of a “Digital Aristotle” can help support Robinson’s goals of divergent thinking and collaboration.

note – the viewpoints presented in the videos are not intended to represent any specific position of ESC Region XI and are intended solely to be thought-provoking for the purpose of this activity.

2) Between now and the conference, join in the Twitter Chat for this activity by Tweeting with the hashtag #sdlcflip to share and discuss your ideas with other conference attendees.

If you've never joined a Twitter Chat before, use the search function in Twitter to find all Tweets that include the hashtag #sdlcflip to see what others have said. When you're ready to comment, submit your own Tweet and just be sure to include #sdlcflip in your message. You can continue to search and comment as much as you’d like to further the Twitter chat conversation.

Building Bolder Schools: It Doesn't Hurt to Be First-
Who wants to be the line leader? Ask that in any elementary room and every hand would go flying into the air. And yet, schools seem to be terrified of being the first ones to adopt new ideas in technology. Somewhere between kindergarten and our last faculty meeting, the role of line leader seems to have gone from the best job on the board to a position that’s just a little terrifying. When did we become so terrified of being a trailblazer? Let’s explore the risks, benefits, and transformations that can oc

Game On, Level One - Badges for ʺOrientation to Online Learningʺ!
Limited Capacity seats available

You know you need to prepare your students for online learning readiness to improve their chances for success. You know it needs to be engaging to the student without being overwhelming but you are pressed to find both of these together. TxVSN has the answer, an ʺOrientation to Online Learningʺ badging system which aims at acquainting the student and parent with the online instruction process, possible technological tools used within an online course, and basic online communication skills, all by earning badges based on real world assessments. When a specific activity is completed, a badge will be released to the student automatically. A system status is sent to the student's designated educator when the student completes the orientation. For students, this will ensure greater familiarity with what online learning is, prior to acceptance into an online course. Learn how you can use this free program to prepare your students and parents for the online learning experience.

CLUE In is a state initiated ʺOrientation to Online Learningʺ badging system which aims at acquainting the student and parent with the online instruction process, possible technological tools used within an online course, and basic online communication skills, all by earning badges based on real world assessments.

A Look at Wireless Problems and Solutions for Schools
Limited Capacity seats available

This enlightening presentation will dissect common problems we have encountered with the various school districts we work with across the state of Texas. We will share what we have been doing to solve these problems. Because of BYOD, there is an influx of wireless devices and an increased need for coverage and capacity. Too often, schools do not realize that they haven't fully optimized their configurations. In this presentation, we address all of these issues as well as give our recommendations for BYOD provisioning and authentication. We will close by showing you what the manufacturers aren't telling you about 802.11ac and why you should wait. Help your school to make educated decisions by becoming informed on the changing trends in wireless.

Founded by the guys that founded Compaq Computers back in 1992, Insource has been helping schools of all sizes implement successful BYOD projects for nearly 20 years.

QRazy about Codes: QR Codes in the Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

Quick Response codes (known as QR Codes or QR Tags) are advanced barcodes that are readable by smartphones and other devices such as iPods with cameras, etc. Unlike traditional barcodes that can contain only a few characters, QR Codes can contain over 4000 characters. Combined with mobile technology, this makes them perfect for displaying large amounts of text, creating links to websites, shortcuts to send pre-populated emails or text messages, links to iTunes, Google Maps, etc. On that basis, participants of this session will learn how to structure lessons using QR codes in activities such as multiple choice instant feedback, scavenger hunt test reviews, self-check flash cards, guided practice help, choose your own adventures, and more. Moreover, students can easily create their own QR codes for reflection, assessment, share-pair reviews, and more.
